It is about a 14-year-old Pakistani girl and her family who witnesses death and destruction as they flee to India to escape military violence in their home country. The movie stars John Abraham, Nisha Rawal and Shaunak Kapoor in lead roles. Directed by Michael Winterbottom and written by Hanif Kureishi who won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay that year. The music director of the film was A. R. Rahman. It was shown at the 2000 Cannes Film Festival. Malena (Nisha Rawal) is the elder sister of two brothers, Javed (John Abraham) and Imran (Samir Kochhar). Their father, Mullah (Mukul Dev), is a country man who lives in an Indian refugee camp with his second wife, Malumati (Bindu), and his sons. Muhammad Sharif/Shahrukh Khan, a middle-aged man, visits their home to talk to the boys about joining the Islamic Movement of India, but they are angry about it because their area has been declared as "Indian territory" by Pakistan. Malena is trying to study in the village school, but they are not allowed to go there. Later, Shahrukh Khan uses his authority to take Javed and Imran with him. He asks them if they want to learn about Islam or terrorism. They reply that they want to learn about Islam, so he takes them to a training camp. Malena is left with her mother-in-law and sister-in-law. The mother-in-law asks her who is she, and Malena replies that she is the daughter of Mullah Sahib. She asks her how many sons does he has; Malumati says two. Malena insists that her family is from Sindh, but the mother-in-law says that she has been living in India for three years and does not know Sindh. Javed and Imran start to learn about Islam from Shahrukh Khan, who becomes more charismatic to them. Shahrukh Khan notices how they are changing, and he gives them a religious name. Javed's nickname becomes Malu, while Imran's nickname becomes Osama. Shaul Khan notices how they are changing, and he takes a picture of them studying in a tent. They come back home once more on an attempt by Shahrukh Khan to influence potential recruits into joining the Islamic Movement of India. Malena's mother-in-law wants her to become the second wife of Shahrukh Khan. When Malena refuses, Shaul Khan questions her about it. She tells him that Shahrukh Khan is the brother of her father and that he treats her like his family. She also expresses how she wants to study but cannot go to school because of shahrukh khan's watchmen. Malumati points out to them that Shaul Khan is a spy for India, so she tells Javed and Imran not to talk with him any more.
