The Saraswati Shishumandir has been running since the year 2000 and has assembled a library of over a million books on a wide range of topics, including philosophy, mythology, religion, linguistics and culture. The website gives Indians access to this vast pool of information without having to travel far from home. I use the website as my go-to resource when I need to know about or research something that is mentioned in another book. For as little as Rs 20 you can access all the books on their site with your username and password. The Saraswati Shishumandir is also an academic institute conducting research in the field of Sanskrit studies focusing mainly on Vedānta. The Saraswati Shishumandir website is an educational resource primarily for scholars of Sanskrit who want to access information in the form of books, but also to anyone who has an interest in the language or culture. This site primarily focuses on resources available online, including high quality scanlations of ancient texts. The occasion for start of the site was a lecture given by Hansraj Gaur at The Centre for Philosophy, Culture & Society in New Delhi, India on 6 December 2000 entitled "Saraswati / Truth : Ancient / Modern". Since that time interested people have come forward to make this project a reality. Over the years this initiative has grown to include many features : The Saraswati Shishumandir has organised several events to mark the importance of reading, including the translation of Bhagavad Gita into Hindi. It is one of the oldest Sanskrit sites for translations of books. Its goal is also to encourage its contributors in Sanskrit translation.The aim is to popularize access to more information on Vedānta and other topics through Sanskrit texts and translations available online, including original Sanskrit texts. It encourages Sanskrit scholars, students and interested people to make their own contributions. Saraswati Shishumandir is a project of the Centre for Sanskrit Studies and Culture. The website has a prominent feature of a "Saraswati Kavacham" in PDF format. It is a poem in Sanskrit that inspires readers to read more. The poem was written by Prof. Hansraj Gaur when he was invited to give a lecture on "Saraswati / Truth : Ancient / Modern" at the Centre for Philosophy, Culture & Society in New Delhi, India on 6 December 2000. It encourages people to learn and read. It has been translated by Dr. Devdutt Pattanaik in English and Hindi.
